Here's Exactly What to Expect

First Time at a Pilates Studio? Here's What to Expect

Walking into a Pilates studio for the first time can feel like stepping into unfamiliar territory. Maybe you have seen reformer videos on social media and wondered what those machines actually do. Maybe a friend recommended it for your back pain, or maybe you are simply looking for a form of exercise that feels more intentional than a crowded gym. Whatever brought you here, this guide will walk you through exactly what to expect so you can arrive feeling confident and at ease.

1. Before Your First Visit

What to Wear

Wear comfortable, fitted clothing that allows your instructor to observe your alignment clearly. Think leggings and a snug top rather than loose, baggy clothes. The reason is practical: your instructor needs to see how your body moves to give you accurate corrections. You do not need special Pilates clothing or expensive activewear. Just something you can move freely in.

Grip socks are a nice touch for working on the reformer, but they are not a requirement. We have them available at the studio if you would like to try them.

What NOT to Do Beforehand

Avoid eating a heavy meal 1-2 hours before your session. Pilates involves deep, controlled breathing and significant core engagement, so a full stomach can make things uncomfortable. A light snack is fine if you are hungry. Just stay well-hydrated beforehand and you will be good to go.

Arrive a Little Early

We recommend arriving 10-15 minutes before your session. This gives you time to check in, fill out any intake forms, get changed, and take a moment to settle in. First-time visits can feel a little overwhelming, so having that buffer lets you relax before your session begins.

Our studio is designed to feel welcoming from the moment you walk in. We provide everything you need: private showers, lockers, complimentary drinks, a hair dryer, and our signature perfume. You can come with just yourself. We have the rest covered.

2. Your First Session: Step by Step

Here is exactly how your first visit will unfold:

a) Welcome & Consultation

Your instructor will sit down with you and take the time to learn about you. They will ask about your goals — whether that is pain relief, better posture, general fitness, or something more specific. They will also ask about any past injuries, current physical conditions, and your exercise history.

This is not a test. There are no right or wrong answers. The purpose is simple: the more we understand about you, the better we can design your experience. If you have never exercised before, that is perfectly fine. If you are recovering from an injury, we want to know so we can keep you safe.

b) InBody Assessment & Posture Check

Before you start moving, we use an InBody scanner to analyze your body composition — muscle mass, body fat percentage, and body water balance. This takes just a few minutes and gives us an objective baseline to work from.

Your instructor will also perform a posture assessment, observing how you stand, where your body holds tension, and any asymmetries that could affect your movement. This data is the foundation of your personalized program. It means your Pilates experience is built for your body, not copied from a generic template.

c) Introduction to the Reformer

If you have never used a reformer before, it can look a little intimidating. Your instructor will walk you through each part of the machine: the carriage, the springs, the foot bar, the straps. They will explain how resistance works and how it will be adjusted throughout your session.

More importantly, they will introduce you to the three foundational principles of Pilates:

  • Proper breathing — Pilates uses a specific lateral breathing pattern that activates your deep stabilizing muscles
  • Core engagement — Learning to activate your deep abdominal muscles, not just the surface ones
  • Neutral spine — Understanding and maintaining the natural curve of your spine during movement

Everything is explained step by step, at a pace that feels natural to you. There is no rush.

d) 50-Minute Guided Session

Your first session is 50 minutes and moves entirely at your pace. Your instructor watches every movement and provides real-time feedback. They will adjust the spring resistance, modify positions, and change exercise difficulty based on how your body responds in that moment.

You will not be pushed beyond what your body can handle. But you will be gently challenged. Most first-time clients are surprised by how much they feel working — especially in muscles they did not know they had.

e) Cool-Down & Feedback

After your session, your instructor will guide you through a brief cool-down to release any tension. Then they will share what they observed: areas where you showed natural strength, areas where your body needs more support, and any movement patterns they noticed.

They will also outline recommendations for your program going forward. You will leave your first session with a much deeper understanding of your own body — and that alone is worth the visit.

3. Common Worries (And Why They’re Unnecessary)

We hear these concerns all the time. Every single one of them is completely normal.

”I’m not flexible enough”

This might be the most common worry we hear, and it is also the least valid. Pilates builds flexibility. You do not need to be flexible before you start. In fact, many of our clients come to us precisely because they feel stiff, tight, or restricted in their movement. That is exactly what Pilates addresses.

Most of our clients begin at the same starting point — and they notice real, tangible changes within just a few sessions.

”I’ve never exercised before”

Private sessions are specifically designed for beginners. Unlike a group class where the instructor must follow a set routine for everyone, a private session is built entirely around you. Your instructor adapts every single movement to your current level.

There is no comparison with other students. No competition. No pressure to keep up. Just you and an instructor whose full attention is dedicated to helping you move better.

”Will it hurt?”

Pilates is challenging, but it should never be painful. There is an important difference between feeling your muscles work (which is normal and good) and feeling pain (which is not).

Your instructor adjusts the spring resistance, body positioning, and exercise difficulty to match your body. If anything feels wrong — even slightly — just say so. We adapt immediately. Your safety and comfort are the top priority, always.

”I don’t speak Thai”

Not a problem at all. Our instructors are multilingual and can guide you comfortably in English, Korean, Japanese, and Thai. We work with clients from all over the world — expats, travelers, and locals alike. Wherever you come from, we are ready to welcome you.

4. What Makes Private Different from What You’ve Seen Online

Most Pilates content you see on social media shows group reformer classes — rows of people doing synchronized movements on matching machines. It looks fun, and it is. But private Pilates is an entirely different experience.

In a group setting, the instructor divides their attention among 6, 8, or even 12 students. They cannot watch your form closely. They cannot adjust the springs specifically for your body. They follow a pre-planned routine that has to work for everyone in the room — which means it is optimized for no one in particular.

In a private session, the difference is night and day:

  • 100% of your instructor’s attention is on you. Every repetition is observed and guided.
  • Equipment is adjusted for your body. Spring tension, foot bar height, and strap length are set to match your proportions, not a standard default.
  • Real-time corrections happen throughout. Your instructor does not wait until the end to give feedback — they correct your form as you move, so you build good habits from the start.
  • Progress is tracked session to session. Your instructor knows where you left off, what improved, and what to focus on next. Every workout builds meaningfully on the last.

This is why our clients see faster, more consistent, and safer results. It is not just exercise. It is a structured, personalized movement practice designed to create lasting change in your body.
